Tindora and Can help reduce Blood Sugar, good for Diabetic

I first cooked and blogged about this tindora recipe more than a year back. OK, But what is Tindora? Tindora is a type of gherkin, which is also known as Kundru in U.P. Tondli/Tendli in Maharashtra, Ghiloda or Tindora in Gujarat and Kovaikai in Tamil, Dondakai in Telugu, Tondekayi in Kannada, Telakuch in Bengali, and Kovakai in Malayalam.

It is not the tastiest of dishes and is considered to be a distant cousin of the Parwal. In fact the Tindora Zhunka was one of the better tindora dishes I ever had. Try the recipe here

Well, the point of the post was that Kundru or the Tindora can help reduce blood sugar. So, all you diabetic or sugar conscious readers, it is time to try out the Tindora Recipe once again.

Here is the recipe again:

Steps:
Slice in circles, 250 grams of Tindora into small discs, like the picture above.
Chop Two large onions into small pieces. Cut into slices in one direction, turn by 90 degrees and cut across the slices :)

Deseed and Chop two tomatoes same way as we did the onions.
Chop 2 green Chillis in anyway.

Heat oil in a thick Bottom Pan, and add a tsp each of Mustard seed and Jeera into the oil.
Immediately add the onions and green chillis.
When Onions are limp, add tomatoes, and saute for some time.
Add the Tindoras.
Add salt to taste, and half tsp of red chilli.
Cover and cook in low heat for 15 minutes, opening the lid and stirring from time to time.
After the 15 minutes, add a cup of Besan or Gram Flour.
Mix well, and keep stirring in low heat.
Sprinkle some water with fingers so that it is not dry.
Cover it, and keep stirring every couple of minutes.
Should be done in 15 minutes.
Have with Hot Chappatis
Oh, I am back!

You make a very bold statement that “Tindora can help reduce blood sugar” Can you please back it up with some real scientific details ??

Hi PJ. Thanks for dropping by and leaving your comments.
I don’t have the scientific data to back up my claims, because this was in reference to an article which mentioned the benefits of Tindora.
I already had cooked this Tindora recipe to blog here I wrote that.

This I can assure you.
Tindora is a common vegetable and will have no side effects so anyone can have Tindora.
I doubt if anybody will replace their Diabetic medications with Tindora based on my recipe so I don’t need to back up the claim.
I am not a doctor, but I sure can claim that it is really goood for a diabetic to eat vegetables because I come from a family of diabetics and have cared for more diabetics than I could handle.

Chives have been found to be good.
And all vegies like tindora, gourd, cocumber are good.
And even if they are not good, they won’t harm.

I didn’t see it on the shelves of supermarkets when I was in the states, so I won’t be able to guide you. Maybe you can ask some of the other India bloggers who live in the US like Indira of Mahanandi, Shilpa of Aayisrecipes.

Excellent post…, thanks for sharing.

Hey Linda,

You can find tindora in any of the local Indian grocers. Call them before hand to know when do they get fresh veggies. It is normally on wednesdays or fridays. I have never seen them in American supermarkets.

yes this is food that can help for diabetic people, i read from salmon for savings that this healthy food is so helpfull to keep loong aour life and keep healthy

Asda supermarket now stock Shana indian frozen vegetables.
They do stock Tindora(described as baby courgetts} priced at 99p medium bag ready sliced.
Try cooking with prawns.indian spices and scotch bonnet chillis its so delicious and tastey………..

Hi.. I like every step of your recipe except where you said “Deseed” the tomatoes. By de-seeding you are actually throwing away the great goodness the ‘flesh’ of the tomatoes have.
Cook tomatoes with seeds, they dont hurt you.

Thanks Tony

A nice article, as u said there won’t be any side effect, and is a very good combination with chapathi.

This is really very helpful for diabetics. But one should take uncook like salad. better to take one or two after brush in morning as soon you wake up. And don’t take anything for about 60mts – except plain water. This will help better to control sugar. For This i have no scientific test result, but hope some one wiil try and give their result. simple blood sugar two week report before and after start taking tindora . morning without taking anything but after atleast two hr of tindora taken time. and similar twohrs after meals.

send more info and recomendations and diferents uses as well as bennefits….

I have never cooked tindora with the besan or gram flour as the receipe calls. However, I have cooked a few other vegetables (including broccoli) with the final touch of besan though not as much as this receipe calls for.
Therefore I would like to make a reccomendation here. Precook the besan prior to adding to the nearly cooked/cooked vegetables. By precook I mean roasted and this is how: In another pan, heat a tablespoon or similar oil and add the besan and stir cook/roast until the besan feels or looks light. Add this roasted besan to the vegetables and stir to coat them. The vegetable peices will bot be all stuck and willnot taste floury.
